Crusaders Complete Successful Day at Bobcat Invitational
Ben Sekuloski won the 100-meter dash on Friday.

The Valparaiso University track and field team took several athletes to the Bobcat Invitational, hosted by Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. On the second day of the three-day event, sophomore Ben Sekuloski (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) was victorious in the 100-meter dash while moving up the Valpo record book. Junior Alexander Bruno (Bloomington, Ill./University) also climbed the record book in the 5000-meter run.

How It Happened

  • On Thursday, the first day of competition, sophomore Jake Rasawehr (Celina, Ohio/Celina) placed 14th in the discus throw with a toss of 156 feet, 10 inches.
  • On Friday, senior Andrew Guzek (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) wound up 12th overall after his effort of 170-6 in the hammer throw.
  • In the women’s 5000-meter run, senior Kim Heiny (Burnettsville, Ind./Twin Lakes) finished the race in 14th with a time of 18:14.95.
  • Sekuloski ran the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.95, which put him 17th overall. In the 400, he crossed the finish line first, coming in at 48.20. That moves him into third all-time in the Valpo outdoor record book, which is just one-tenth off the fastest time in school history.
  • Senior Brandon Riley (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) finished 12th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.35.
  • In the 1500-meter run, junior Connor Hickey (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) crossed the line in 4:06.87, which was good for 10th place.
  • At the Bobcat Invitational on Thursday, Bruno was able to come up with a fifth-place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:55.28. With that effort, he moves into fourth all-time on the school top times list for that event. Junior Jack Mader (Granger, Ind./Penn) also ran the 5000-meter race. He finished seventh, clocking in at 15:16.95.
