Valpo Splits on Sunday to Take Series from Oakland
Sunday, April 23, 2006
Kyle Obenauf (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central H.S.) allowed one run in a complete game victory helping Valparaiso earn a doubleheader split with Oakland on Sunday afternoon and take the weekend series winning three of the four contests. The Golden Grizzlies won the opener 7-4 in ten innings before Valpo won the nightcap 7-1.

Oakland (11-27, 8-4 Mid-Con) scored first in game two on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Crepeau in the opening inning, but Obenauf would allow just four hits the rest of the way on his way to throwing a six-hitter.

Valpo tied the game in the second without a hit. Brian Rzepka (South Bend, Ind./Penn H.S.) led off with a walk and advanced all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt that was thrown into right field. He then scored on a Tyler Lowell (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest H.S.) ground out.

Kevin Kutansky (Schererville, Ind./Munster H.S.) put the Brown and Gold in front for good in the third with a triple to right that scored Kevin Perri (South Bend, Ind./Adams H.S.) and scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Colin Reynolds (Crookston, Minn./Central H.S.).

Reynolds' two-run double in the fifth put the Crusaders in front 5-1 and Valpo added two more in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Jon Rupno (Green Bay, Wis./Pulaski H.S.) and a double by Perri, his second hit of the game.

Obenauf did not walk a batter while improving to 1-1 on the season, scattering just six hits while throwing just 91 pitches over the seven innings. David Thomas started and suffered the loss (2-2) for Oakland, allowing six runs, five earned, on just three hits while walking six.

In the opener, Drew Jenison hit a three-run homer to right-center in the top of the tenth to give the Golden Grizzlies the extra inning victory.

Valpo scored first in the opening inning on a single by Kutansky and added two more in the second on a ground out and a double by Perri. Oakland took the lead with four runs in the sixth, three of which were unearned. Rob Merkle's two-run double to right made it 4-3 Golden Grizzlies.

The Crusaders tied the game in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. A grounder to third by Rzepka was bobbled by Oakland allowing Kutansky to score, but that would be the only run Valpo would get in the inning, and the game moved on to the tenth before Oakland plated the winning runs.

Scott Boleski (1-1) earned the win throwing three innings in relief for Oakland while Patrick Paulus (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove H.S.) suffered the loss (1-1) for Valpo.

Valparaiso (10-22, 3-8) will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon as the Crusaders head to Peoria, Ill. for a doubleheader against Bradley. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
