Valparaiso University fifth-year senior Jon Tieman (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Prairie Ridge) was recognized for his excellence on the field and in the classroom on Friday as a featured student-athlete in this week’s State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete spotlight.
A three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team honoree, Tieman finished with a 3.71 undergraduate grade point average in finance and currently holds a 3.675 GPA while working toward his master of business administration (MBA). The right-handed pitcher is a five-time College of Business Dean’s List honoree, three-time recipient of President’s Academic Honors and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the academic honor society for business students. He is also a member of Alpha Iota Delta, the academic honor society recognizing students in fields of decision sciences and information systems.
Tieman has accrued nearly 200 strikeouts in his Valpo career and is on the fringe of cracking the program’s all-time Top 10 for career strikeouts. He was a 2017 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American, a 2017 Horizon League All-Freshman Team honoree and a 2018 All-MVC Honorable Mention choice.
In addition to his prowess on the field and in the classroom, Tieman has served his community helping deliver care packages for Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake, Ill. and through volunteer work at the Valparaiso Boys and Girls Club, mentoring and tutoring children.
