Colin Fields Honored as MVC Pitcher of the Week

For the second time in three weeks, Valparaiso University baseball junior Colin Fields (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Fields becomes the first Valpo player to win two MVC weekly honors in the same season since the program joined the conference. Two weeks removed from the eighth no-hitter in program history, Fields yielded just two hits over seven shutout innings on his way to earning the victory in Saturday’s win over Butler.

The junior right-hander scattered three walks and racked up 11 strikeouts, a total that set a season high and tied a career high. He struck out the side in both the first and fifth innings and retired the first 10 men he faced. Fields’ effort helped Valpo garner a 7-1 victory at Bulldog Park in Indianapolis.

Fields is up to 36 strikeouts for the season, fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference. The junior right-hander crossed the 100-career strikeout mark on Saturday as he has fanned 105 in just 92 1/3 career innings. Opponents are hitting just .141 this season against Fields, who has reached double figures in strikeouts in two of his last three starts. In addition, Fields has allowed two hits or fewer in three of his five starts this season.

Valpo will open conference play on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at DBU. The game will be streamed on the Patriot Broadcasting Network free of charge with links to live video, audio and stats available on ValpoAthletics.com.
