Valparaiso University's Rob Giancola and John Tsahas were named the Pioneer Football League Players of the Week following their performances against Austin Peay last Saturday.
Giancola, a sophomore wide receiver from Whiting, Ind./HS, shared the PFL Offensive Player of the Week honor with Dayton running back Geno Mattioda. Against Austin Peay, Giancola made a career-high nine catches for 125 yards and all three Crusader touchdowns. His scoring receptions came on 41, 15 and 12-yard passes from David Macchi. Giancola finished with 11 touchdown receptions, tying Valpo's single-season record (Dan Bogar, 1984; Mike Healey, 1985).
Tsahas, a junior strong safety, was named PFL Defensive Player of the Week after recording seven tackles, an interception, a pass breakup and a blocked punt against Austin Peay. His interception led to Ryan Bateman's 30-yard field goal and a 24-21 lead with 4:34 remaining.
Giancola and Tsahas join Macchi as PFL Players of the Week during the 2002 season.
