Football Announces Week 5 Team Honors

The Valparaiso University football program has announced its weekly award winners for Saturday’s Week 5 game, a 27-24 overtime loss to Marist at Brown Field.

Senior Robert Washington (Huntersville, N.C. / East Gaston [Old Dominion]) was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Week, while senior Ben Niesner (Black Diamond, Wash. / Tahoma [Portland State]) was tabbed the squad’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

In addition, the program recognized the following Scout Team Players of the Week: offensive freshman quarterback Mikey Appel (Springboro, Ohio / Springboro), defensive freshman defensive lineman James Keighley (Dayton, Ohio / Archbishop Alter) and special teams freshman wide receiver Dom Grguric (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit).

Washington enjoyed his third straight 100-yard rushing game and the seventh in his 11 career games at Valpo. He produced 149 yards on the ground on 27 carries while twice plunging into the end zone to lift his season touchdown total to four. Niesner averaged 40.8 yards per punt on eight kicks, seven of which were placed inside the 20.

Valpo will visit St. Thomas on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff in St. Paul Minn., a contest that represents the first-ever matchup between the two teams. The game will be broadcast on TommieSports.com and the hometown radio call will be available on 95.1 FM Valparaiso, ValpoAthletics.com and the TuneIn Radio app.
