Gary Gray joined the Valparaiso University coaching staff prior to the 1999 season.  He tutors the punters and kickers.

The 2008 season saw Gray’s pupils connect on 80% of their field goal attempts while his punter has added two yards to his average over the past three years, including 25% of the punts landing inside of the 20-yard line.

In 2005, Crusader kicker Andrew McCawley became Valpo’s all-time career extra point record holder with 83 points after touchdowns.  The 2003 PFL Champion team led the league in field goals made as McCawley earned First Team All-PFL North honors. During the PFL Championship season of 2000, Gray coached the Crusaders' punters to a league-leading 37.1 yards per kick.

Gray has extensive teaching experience, having been a teacher and coach in Northwest Indiana throughout his entire professional career, including 28 years coaching football.  A teacher at Valparaiso High School since 1978, Gray is currently the Department Chair for Engineering and Technology.  He has served as an assistant wrestling coach, assistant varsity football coach, and assistant varsity baseball coach at VHS.  Gray was honored in 1986 as the District I Teacher of the Year in Technology Education.

In 1973, Gray began his teaching/coaching career in Portage, Ind., working in the Portage school system until 1978.  During this five-year period, he coached football, basketball and baseball.

Gray graduated from Ball State in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in technology education.  He earned a master’s degree in education from Ball State in 1976.  Gray went to Ball State on a baseball scholarship.
