2017: Started all 11 games for the Crusaders… Finished fourth on the team in tackles with 56 (5.1 per game)… Made seven pass breakups, second on the team… Recorded a tackle for a two-yard loss in the season opener on Sept. 2 at Montana… Made an interception and returned it 16 yards on Oct. 14 vs. Marist, one of five Valpo interceptions in a 49-15 win over the Red Foxes. That marked the ninth interception of Diaz-Martinez’s Crusader career… Matched a career-high with 10 tackles in the Sept. 2 season opener at Montana.

2016: Played in all 11 games and made 70 tackles, 36 solos as a sophomore... Also had a team-high five interceptions, one fumble recovery and six pass breakups... Picked up a career-high 10 tackles on Sept. 17 against Trinity International, plus had an interception in that game... Had a 49-yard pick six on Oct. 8 against Drake... Also had interceptions on Oct. 15 at Stetson, Oct. 29 vs. Butler and Nov. 12 vs. Jacksonville... Made his second career fumble recovery and his first of the season on Nov. 12 against Jacksonville... Has eight career interceptions... His five interceptions in 2016 were the most by any Crusader since Anthony Curry had seven in 2008. 

2015: Saw action in all 10 games in his freshman season at Valpo ... finished his rookie campaign with 23 tackles - 15 solo - and three interceptions ... ranked second on the team with his three picks ... picked off a pair of passes and registered a tackle in debut Sept. 3 at Eastern Kentucky ... recorded season-high six tackles - all solo - Nov. 7 at Butler ... tallied five tackles, forced a fumble and broke up a pass Sept. 12 against Sacred Heart ... came up with interception Oct. 3 at Davidson.

Prep: A three-year letter winner for the Patriots...named Third Team All-Broward in 2014...was a part of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 District Championship teams...also played on the 2011 5A State Champion team that went 15-0...was the student government treasurer.

Personal: Joey is the son of Aurora Martinez ... majoring in sports management with minors in business and communications.
