Crusaders Finish Eighth at Horizon League Championships

The Valparaiso men’s cross country squad competed at the Horizon League Championships Saturday in Green Bay, Wis., finishing the meet in eighth place.

Butler took the overall team title, sweeping the top five positions for a perfect score of 15 points.  The Crusaders tallied 202 points on the afternoon, just five points behind seventh-place Wright State.

Fifth-year senior Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) led the way Saturday for the Crusaders, placing 20th with a time of 26:22.40 over the eight-kilometer course.  Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) was the next Valpo runner across the line, completing the race in 27:08.98, good for a 40th-place finish.

Bryan Gill (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) came home in 51st place for the Crusaders with a time of 27:23.70, while Leandro Schultz (Valley View, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) finished in 54th position with a time of 27:24.89.  Tyler Toll (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) closed out the quintet of Crusader scorers, crossing the line in 27:25.03 for a 55th-place showing. 

Valparaiso returns to the course in two weeks, traveling to West Lafayette to run in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.  The men’s race is scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. CST start.
