Winters Earns Weekly Award From Horizon League

For the second time during the fall 2014 season, a Crusader has won the Golfer of the Week honors from the Horizon League. Senior Eric Winters (Elgin, Ill./Saint Edward) took home the honors this week after placing seventh in a 92-golfer field at the Firestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, a course that coach David Gring calls, “one of the premier golf courses in the Midwest.”

Winters finished only five shots back in the individual standings, posting a three-round total of 217. This was the third time he shot below a 220 for a tournament this season, and was his second best 54-hole score, coming in just behind a 214 performance at the Golfweek Program Challenge in mid-September.  Consistency was key to his performance this week, as Winters shot a one-over 73 in both the first and third rounds, while he shot a team-best round of 71 in the middle round.

Winters now joins teammate Nick Seitz (Xenia, Ohio/Carroll) as winners of the weekly award from the league office this season. Winters and the rest of his Crusader teammates look to carry momentum forward when they hit the links again at the Dayton Flyer Invitational, October 20th and 21st in Kettering, Ohio.
