Kostouros Garners MVC Golfer of the Week

Valparaiso University men’s golf senior Yianni Kostouros (Crown Point, Ind. / Crown Point [Ball State]) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week on Wednesday.

Kostouros tied the modern program record for 36-hole tournament score and earned a runner-up finish in an 89-player field at this week's Twin Oaks Intercollegiate, hosted by Missouri State at the par-71, 6760-yard Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Mo.

Kostouros carded a 137 (-5) over the two rounds, finishing two strokes behind the individual medalist. His career-low 67 (-4) in Round 1 tied for the sixth-best 18-hole round in terms of overall score since the program’s 2009 relaunch. He equaled the 36-hole tournament program mark in terms of both overall score and relation to par that had stood since September 2014 (Zach Cutler), helping Valpo obliterate the previous program record for 36-hole tournament score.

Kostouros’ effort, which was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 third hole in Round 2 and featured eight birdies, helped him achieve his first top-5 finish of the season. In addition, he helped Valpo finish as the team runner-up in a 16-squad field as the Beacons led a group of six Missouri Valley Conference participants. The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but was shortened to 36 due to inclement weather on Monday afternoon.

This marks Kostouros’ first MVC weekly award and the sixth earned by a member of Valpo’s program this season with the first five coming courtesy of Caleb VanArragon.

The Beacons will return to action next week at the Butler Spring Invitational, which begins on Monday in Indianapolis.
