Michigan State Upends Valpo Friday Night

            Michigan State recorded the fastest time in all 12 events on Friday evening as the Spartans defeated Valparaiso 131-71 at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool.

            Kyle Verage (Hubertus, Wis./Marquette H.S.) finished runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.20 seconds.  The junior also registered a third place effort in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall in 2:05.20.

            Skyler Lennan (Lee’s Summit, Mo./North H.S.) turned in the day’s second quickest time for the Crusaders in the 100 breaststroke.  The freshman finished with a time of 1:05.37.

            Adam Jajtner (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington H.S.) finished third in the 1,000 free with a time of 1:16.93 for the Crusaders.  He also turned in a third best time of 4:59.80 in the 500 free.  Ansel Hillmer (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough H.S.) also placed third for the Brown and Gold, doing so in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.76 seconds.

            “We had some personal bests today, and I feel like we swam well after coming off of the winter break,” interim head coach Barbara Tyree said afterwards.  “We are right where we should be this time of year in preparation for the conference meet in five weeks.”

            Valparaiso will return to the pool next Saturday afternoon, January 19, for the Crusaders’ final home meet of the season.  The meet against Eastern Illinois will begin at 2 p.m. at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool.
