Crusader Men Swim at Monmouth Saturday

The Valparaiso men’s swimming and diving squad earned victories in all 11 events on Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders swam against Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill.  Team scores were not kept for the meet.

Freshman Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) broke into Valpo’s all-time top-10 in an event for the second time in as many meets this season, winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.92, tied for 10th in Crusader history.  Castro Diaz also took top honors in the 500 free, covering the distance in 4:59.56.

In the sprint freestyle events, sophomore Phil May (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) won the 50 free with a time of 23.54, while sophomore Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) captured the 100 free with a time of 50.08.  Sophomore Fernando Aguilar (San Salvador, El Salvador/Colegio Internacional de San Salvador) completed the 200 free in 1:54.76 to win that event, while in the 1000 free, freshman Frederick Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) took top honors with a time of 10:27.99.

Jenny also won the 100 breaststroke on Saturday, posting a time of 1:00.74 for his second event victory.  Senior Guillermo Aguilar (San Salvador, El Salvador/Colegio Internacional de San Salvador [Cal State Northridge]) captured the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.11, while sophomore Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton) won the 100 backstroke in 56.57 seconds.

Castro Diaz, Braun, King and Fernando Aguilar teamed up to lead the way in the 200 freestyle relay, as the quartet covered the course in 1:31.07.  King, freshman Atolo Tuinukuafe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), Guillermo Aguilar and sophomore William Mathe (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) captured the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.24.

The Crusaders return to action next Friday, October 19 as Valpo hosts Cleveland State at the ARC.  The meet is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
