Seven Crusaders Earn Winter Academic All-League Honors

Seven Valparaiso student-athletes earned spots on the Horizon League Winter Academic All-League teams, as announced by the league office this afternoon.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits. A total of 76 student-athletes were recognized from the league's nine institutions.

Men’s Swimming (1)

Cody Jones (So.) – Second-fastest on the team in both the 1000 and 1650 freestyle events, posting top times on the season that were just a few seconds outside Valpo’s all-time top-10.  Placed 15th at the Horizon League Championships in the 1650 free.  Owns a 3.62 cumulative GPA as an accounting and mathematics double major.

Women’s Swimming (1)

Andrea Bretl (Sr.) – Ranked second on the team in four different freestyle events.  Closed career among top-five in Crusader history in 500, 1000 and 1650 free.  Placed 14th in the 1650 free at the Horizon League Championships.  Owns a 3.93 cumulative GPA as a psychology major.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field (3)

Josh Carow (Jr.) – Ranked among the Crusaders’ top sprinters during the indoor season.  Posted Valpo’s second-fastest top times in the 55m (6.94) and 200m (23.18) dashes.  Owns a 3.23 cumulative GPA as a mechanical engineering major.

Jacob Frey (Jr.) – Led the Crusaders in the shot put (43’4 ½”) during the indoor season.  Placed sixth at the HL Indoor Championships in the weight throw (55’1”).  Owns a 3.68 cumulative GPA as a civil engineering major.

Justin Zosso (So.) – Won the pole vault at the HL Indoor Championships.  Set a new program record indoors in the event, clearing 15’1”.  Owns a 3.22 cumulative GPA as a sociology major.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field (2)

Claire Johnson (Sr./Jr.) – Finished ninth at the HL Indoor Championships in the one mile run.  Also ran the leadoff leg for the Crusaders’ distance medley relay squad which placed third.  Owns a 3.87 cumulative GPA as an international economics & cultural affairs and German double major.

Kelli Wosick (Jr.) – Ranked among Valpo’s top sprinters during the indoor season and posted the team’s top time in the 400m dash (58.73).  Finished eighth at HL Indoor Championships in the 400m dash and also was a member of the third-place DMR team.  Owns a 3.81 cumulative GPA as an English and secondary education double major.
