Swimming Drops Horizon League finale against UIC
The Crusaders fell in their Horizon League finale today to UIC.

The Valparaiso swimming teams fell in a dual meet to UIC on Saturday in their final Horizon League meet of the season in Chicago, Ill. The men lost 171.5-115.5, while the women fell 162-115.

Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) led the Crusaders as she scored in four events. She took home first place in the women’s 500 yard freestyle (5:18.47), finished second in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:59.99) and 200 yard IM (2:20.90) and placed third in the 200 yard butterfly (2:13.83).

Dani Gomez Barrientos (Mexico City, Mexico/Grandview Prep.) won the women’s 100 yard butterfly (1:02.32), finished third in the 200 yard IM (2:22.29) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:01.06).

Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) swept the breaststroke titles as he finished in 59.02 in the 100 and touched the wall in 2:13.24 in the 200.

Gonzalo Castro Diaz (New Mexico, Mexico) had a trio of top-three finishes, taking first in the 100 yard butterfly (52.69), second in the 200 yard IM (2:00.19) and third in the 200 yard butterfly (1:59.23).

Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) and Fernando Aguilar (San Salvador, El Salvador/Colegio Internacional de San Salvador) each claimed top spots in the women’s 100 yard freestyle (56.96) and the men’s 500 yard freestyle (5:19.45).

In the 200 yard backstroke races, Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep.) and Vinnie Zaia (Canton, Mich./Salem) each finished second in their respective sections. Penn touched the wall in 2:07.09, while Zaia finished in 2:23.90.

Both the men’s and women’s 200 yard freestyle relay teams took home first place. The men’s team of Jenny, Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West), Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton) and Trent Chamness (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) won in 1:28.60, while the women’s team of Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), McBride, Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and Allie Berry (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) finished in 1:43.68.

Valpo concludes their regular season next Saturday, Jan. 24, when they welcome Eastern Illinois to the ARC pool for senior day. Start time is set for 1:00 pm CT.
