Valpo Women’s Team Swims to Victory
Rachel Law took three event wins on Thursday.

The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to Terre Haute, Ind. to take place in a dual meet against the Engineers of Rose-Hulman Thursday evening. Valpo’s women’s team swam to a head-to-head victory 137-134, while the men’s team fell 192-99.

The Crusaders’ women’s team was led by a handful of first-place finishes, highlighted by three individual wins by Rachel Law (Wayne, Pa./Villa Maria Academy). The junior took first place in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:13.07), 100 yard butterfly (1:04.15), and in the 400 yard IM (4:56.50).

Law’s trio of first-place finishes led eight total individual wins for the Crusaders. Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) took home two first-place finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10.98) and in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:32.35). Paiton Krebs (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) brought in another 18 points individually with two event wins, touching the wall first in the 200 yard butterfly (2:22.45) and in the 500 yard freestyle (5:28.89), while Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) added a win in the 200 yard freestyle (2:03.47).

The Crusader women also won both relay events Thursday night. The first victory came in the 200 medley relay, as Vincenza Zaia (Canton, Mich./Salem), Trimpe, Krebs and Jenny teamed up to win with a time of 1:56.74. Then, with the meet victory in the balance, Valpo’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Jenny, Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves), Trimpe and Krebs touched the wall in 1:44.47, six seconds clear of Rose-Hulman’s team to clinch the dual meet victory.

On the men’s side, freshman Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) scored 27 total points, winning three individual events. Kirar took first place in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:05.32), the 200 yard breaststroke (2:14.86), and the 400 yard IM (4:18.51). The freshman’s time in the 400 IM was eighth-fastest in Crusader history, while his 200 breaststroke time ranks 10th all-time at Valpo.

Joining Kirar in winning individual events on the men’s side were seniors Tim Mitchell (Lakeville, Minn./North) and Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany). Mitchell earned first place in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 55.36, while Jenny finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.62.

Both Crusader teams will be back in action in two weeks for a three-day trip to Grand Rapids, Mich. for the Calvin Winter Invite.
