Crusader Swim Teams Continue Horizon League Championships Thursday
Rachel Law set a new PR in the 500 free prelims Thursday.

The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s swimming teams continued Thursday with day two of the 2016 Horizon League Championships at Oakland University. Day two of the championship meet included the men’s and women’s 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay.

The Crusader men’s team scored 24 points in the 200 free relay, finishing with a time of 1:25.61. The team of Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), Tim Mitchell (Lakeville, Minn./North), Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) and Colten Lawson (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) jumped into fifth place all-time in the school record book.

Jenny also led the Crusaders in the 50 free prelims, posting a time of 21.30 to set a new PR and improve on his fifth-best time in the Crusader record books. Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Oxford) closed out the 200 IM prelims with a team-best time of 1:54.43, coming up just shy of qualifying for the event finals, while Mac Sogandares (Reston, Va./South Lakes) swam a time of 1:58.06, good for sixth in Crusader history.

Freshman Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) paced Valpo in the 500 free prelims, touching the wall in 4:46.04, two-thirds of a second off his PR in the event. A pair of Kirar’s teammates moved into the Crusaders’ all-time top-10 as well, as Bob Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette University H.S.) moved into ninth with a time of 4:48.36, while Ryan Manderfield (Avon Lakes, Ohio/St. Edward) covered the distance in 4:49.43, tenth-best in Valpo history.

The women’s team earned 22 points in the 200 free relay, finishing in 1:41.03 with the team of Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves), Paiton Krebs (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney), and Rachel Law (Wayne, Pa./Villa Maria Academy). McBride finished with a time of 24.95 during the prelims of the 50 free to pace the Crusaders, while Law posted the team’s top time in the 500 free prelims, posting a time of 5:14.66.

The Crusader men finish day two in seventh place with 74 total points, while the women sit in eighth place with 44 points.
