The Valparaiso University women’s swimming team took down Rose-Hulman Saturday evening by a score of 160-122, while the men fell to the Fightin’ Engineers 201-93 in Terre Haute, Ind. The women were victorious in 11 different events, and the men won four.

Senior Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and sophomores Erica Martins (Hartland, Wis./Lake County Lutheran) and Paige Wright (Surprise, Ariz./Paradise Honors) each totaled three wins for the women – two individual and one relay. For the men, junior classmates Bob Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette Univeristy H.S.), Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) and Mac Sogandares (Reston, Va./South Lakes), along with sophomore Dylan Ogle (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) all captured an individual victory for the Crusaders.

The 200-medley relay started things off with the women taking second in 1:57.80. That team comprised of freshman Megan Lugar (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern), freshman Mariah Sturdivant (Chicago, Ill./George Westinghouse Prep.), freshman Lillia Pogue (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff) and Amanda Jenny.

Senior Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep.), sophomore Adrian Acero (Bogotá, Colombia/Augustiniano Salitre), Ogle and sophomore Harrison Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) combined for a third-place finish in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:40.53.

In the 1650-free, both the women and men went 1, 2 for the Crusaders. Senior Vinnie Zaia (Canton, Mich./Salem) and freshman Maddie Wilson (Sugar Grove, Ill./Rosary) had times of 19:31.35 and 19:32.31, respectively for the women. Bretl and Kirar teamed up to go 17:07.82 and 17:12.89, respectively, for the top two spots on the men’s side.

Amanda Jenny recorded her first victory of the evening in the 200-free with a time of 2:05.35, with sophomore teammate Danielle Richardson (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) right behind going 2:06.74. Sogandares took top honors for the Valpo men touching the wall in 1:47.40 for second place.

The 100-back saw another 1, 2 finish for the Crusader women, as sophomore Tara Lawson (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) grabbed first in 1:03.27. Lugar was not far behind, coming in at 1:03.55. In a close race on the men’s side, Penn was out-touched by .01 for first, with his time being 55.17.

Sophomore Emily Baumgartner (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) brought home another win for Valpo in the 100-breast with a time of 1:13.52. Acero had the fastest time for the Crusader men in 1:03.36 – only .52 behind first.

Martins found her first win of the meet in the 200-fly by posting a 2:22.64. Ogle, on the men’s side, also took home a victory just over two minutes in 2:00.68.

In the 50-free, Wright sprinted to her first triumph with a time of 25.52. Harrison Jenny made it close, but settled for second in 22.49, just .24 back of first-place.

After the diving break, Wright collected another win in the 100-free for the women. Her time was 55.60. For the men, Harrison Jenny stopped the clock at 50.93, which was good for fifth.

The 200-back saw Lawson capture a win for the Valpo women in 2:16.67. Teammate Lugar wound up in second, coming in at 2:19.75. Senior Grant Girten (Blue Ash, Ohio/Sycamore) was the best Crusader on the men’s side at 2:04.78. He finished in second.

Baumgartner swam to a second-place finish in the 200-breast for the women in a time of 2:37.25. For the men, Sogandares got his victory in the same race, touching the wall first in 2:16.49.

The 500-free saw two more 1, 2 finishes for the Crusaders on both the women’s and men’s sides. Amanda Jenny gathered her second individual win with a time of 5:31.84, and classmate Zaia not too far behind at 5:39.81. This time, Kirar took the top prize overall for the men in 4:56.62, while teammate Bretl settled for second, just behind in 4:57.98.

In the 100-fly, Martins once again fond the wall first in 1:03.07 for her second win on the day. Teammate Richardson was just .05 behind in second place, going 1:03.12. Ogle recorded a second-place finish for the Valpo men in 54.26, which was only .05 behind first.

Lawson brought home a runner-up finish with a time of 2:22.59 in the 200-IM, while Sogandares garnered a fourth-place spot in a time of 2:05.52 for the men.

The final relay of the competition saw the women take first and second. Wright, Pogue, Martins and Amanda Jenny teamed up for the top spot in 1:45.59, with Richardson, Sturdivant, Zaia and Lugar coming in just behind them in 1:48.59. The men wound up fourth with a time of 1:34.44. The group included Ogle, Penn, sophomore Austin Scheer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and freshman Brett Strongman (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central) as the anchor.

The Crusaders are back in action tomorrow at home against Saginaw Valley State. The action starts at 1 p.m. in the ARC.
