Five Valpo Swimmers Named Academic All-District

The Valpo men’s and women’s swimming teams combined to have five swimmers recognized as Academic All-District honorees as College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) released its swimming Academic All-District rolls on Tuesday.

On the men’s side, sophomore Andrew Berzai (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) represented Valpo, as he owns a 3.715 GPA as an exercise science (pre-physical therapy) major. The Beacons had four women honored as well — sophomore Haley Hume (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette), a civil engineering major with a 3.993 GPA; sophomore Bridget Pollard (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), who boasts a 3.874 GPA in the physician’s assistant program; senior Sophie Morelock (Milan, Mich./Milan), a psychology (pre-OT) major with a 3.858 GPA; and sophomore Sara Strauss (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake), who also is enrolled in the physician’s assistant program and has a 3.638 GPA.

The quintet all meet CSC academic all-district standards by virtue of having a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. To qualify for the honor, individuals must also have reached at least sophomore academic and athletic status and must have been at their institution for at least one calendar year. This is the first year that swimming has been broken out into a standalone category, rather than being one of the sports grouped under the at-large heading.

All five Beacons will be on the CSC Academic All-America ballot.
