Crusaders Fall to Oral Roberts in Championship Match

Valparaiso pulled to within 2-1 after a victory at fourth singles, but was unable to draw any closer, as top-seeded Oral Roberts defeated the Crusaders 4-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament final Friday morning in Indianapolis, Ind. The loss ends the Crusaders' season at 9-13.

Oral Roberts (13-12) opened up the match by winning the doubles point. Clemons Geercken and Craig Dunne defeated Joe Venegas (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North H.S.) and David Bukowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect H.S.) at third doubles by a tally of 8-4. The Golden Eagles clinched the point at second doubles as Tyrone Hill and Cuan Farquharson posted a 9-7 victory over Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) and Shabbi Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Oasys H.S.). The Crusaders' first doubles team of Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands H.S.) and Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) was leading 8-7 when play was stopped.

Singles play began with a loss at third singles for Valpo, as Venegas dropped the point to Farquharson 6-0, 7-5. Bukowski put the Crusaders on the board with his win at fourth singles over Geercken 6-3, 7-5. A victory by Ehrlich over Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer H.S.) at sixth singles 6-4, 6-4 pulled the Golden Eagles to within one point of the championship. Tyrone Hill then clinched the championship for Oral Roberts with his 7-5, 6-2 win over Kooyers at second singles.

In the matches that were not finished, Dunham-Freer led 6-4, 1-6, 4-3 at first singles, while Shideler was tied at fifth singles 6-7 (4), 6-3, 1-1.
