Crusaders Finish First Day of Play at Windy City Invite

Valparaiso took the courts of Chicago State for the first round of play at the Windy City Invitational Friday in Chicago, Ill. The Crusaders, who faced off with members of the Ferris State team, earned at least one win in every singles flight.

In the A Flight, Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) captured a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Cory Elder. Joe Venegas (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North H.S.) was not as successful, dropping his match against Brenton Bacon.

Play in the B Flight saw Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) win 7-6 (0), 6-3 over Mark Hammerman. Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) lost in a three-set battle with Luis Arguello.

Dave Bukowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect H.S./Oakton CC) delivered a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Lewis Degeneault in the C Flight. Teammate Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) also won in the C Flight, downing Kevin Brundle 6-3, 7-6 (11).

Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis) also brought home a win, defeating Corey Banghart 6-1, 6-4 in the D Flight. Blain Keller (Muncie, Ind./Delta H.S.) fell in a close match with Andrew Gunberg.

Play will resume in the Windy City Invitational Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
