Crusaders Collect Eight Wins in Opening Day of Purdue Fall Invitational

The Valparaiso men's tennis team racked up eight wins in the opening day of the Purdue Fall Invitational Friday.

Teams competing in the Purdue Fall Invitational include: Butler, Case Western, Chicago, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Iowa, IUPUI, Marquette, Memphis, Tennessee Tech, Toledo, UW Green Bay, Valparaiso, Vincennes and Western Michigan.

Sophomore Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) got things rolling with a convincing straight set victory over Purdue's Mateus Silva, 6-2, 6-1. Bacalla will face Toledo's Stjepan Sisko in the second round tomorrow.

Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) slid past DePaul's David Vieyra 6-4, 6-4 Friday to advance to second round action. Schorsch will face Green Bay's Leo Gomez Islinger Saturday morning. 

Sophomore Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) rebounded from a first downturn to capture a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Western Michigan's Matt Hamilton. Emhardt and Eastern Kentucky's Juanjo de la Llera have a date in tomorrow's second round. Fellow sophomore Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) downed IUPUI's Thomas Hulme 6-3, 6-4 to move on and play EKU's Florian Graskamp Saturday morning.

University of Chicago’s Sven Kranz defeated freshman Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Gardner will meet Butler’s Austin Woldmoe in the consolation bracket.

Junior Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) made quick work of Cleveland State freshman Kevin Goth, 6-1, 6-2. Savaglio will have a second round showdown with Green Bay's Jared Leto on Saturday. University of Chicago's Brian Sun was able to advance versus Valpo's Brian Hickey (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) via a 6-3, 6-2 score. Hickey will face Eastern Kentucky's Colin Hart in the consolation bracket Saturday.

Junior Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) defeated EKU's Jonas Stropus 6-4, 7-5. The veteran will challenge Western Michigan's Jimmy Beckwith tomorrow. Freshman Chase Hamilton (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) handed IUPUI's Matt Moe a 6-2, 6-3 defeat. Hamilton then dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Western Michigan's Marc Shideler. 

Junior Daniel Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) scored a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Chicago State's Rashley Yeremia before dropping a 6-1, 6-3 match to IUPUI's Patrick O'Neill. 

Day two of singles play continues tomorrow in West Lafayette, Indiana along with the onset of doubles action.
