For the first time in school history, the Crusaders recorded wins in both singles and doubles play in the main draw of the ITA Regionals.

Sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) went toe-to-toe with Northern Illinois' Simon Formont in the opening round before emerging with a 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-3 victory. Schorsch will square off against Aron Hiltzik of Illinois Saturday morning at 8:45 am CT. Hiltzik boasts the No. 13 ranking in the tournament.

Fellow sophomore Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) advanced to the main draw after a speedy 6-1, 6-1 win over Marquette's Gleb Sklyr early Friday morning. Emhardt later succumbed to Northwestern's Konrad Zieba in a hard-fought first round match, 6-3, 6-4.

Sophomore Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) gave the sixth-ranked Sam Shropshire all he could handle in their opening round contest. The sophomore from Northwestern defeated Bacalla 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

The Brown and Gold experienced great success in doubles play as they registered a 2-1 record in the main draw.

Emhardt and Schorsch met little resistance in their first round match. The third-ranked team breezed past NIU's tandem of Kevin Daun/Louis-Philippe Hamel, 8-1. They advance to the Round of 32 where they'll face Ohio State's Matt Mendez/Riley Reist on Saturday.

Bacalla and freshman Chase Hamilton (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) upset the 13th-ranked doubles team of Alexander Kokorev/Lamar Remy from Wisconsin, 8-6. Bacalla/Hamilton will meet Marquette's Kristiyan Trukov/Andre Romanello Saturday in the Round of 32.

Junior Daniel Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) and sophomore Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) took the 15th-ranked Alex Pasareanu/Mihir Kumar to the brink. However, the Northwestern pair prevailed 8-6.

Singles and doubles play continues Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Check Valpoathletics.com for score updates throughout the day.
