The Valpo men's tennis team defeated preseason Mid-American Conference favorite Western Michigan by a score of 5-2 at the Courts of NWI on Sunday afternoon. Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) capped off a 2-0 weekend at No. 1 singles while Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), Chad Kissell (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe), and Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) all logged victories to hand the Broncos their first loss of the spring season.

#33 Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) got things rolling with a 6-2 defeat over #37 Stephen Payne and Jefta Kecic at No. 1 doubles. Valpo secured the doubles point when Dunn and Kissell upended Maik Steiner and Jimmy Beckwith at No. 3. Western Michigan did post a win at No. 2 doubles as Daniel Loebel/Ruben Greiner edged out Bacalla and Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland), 6-4.

The Crusaders clinched the match before surrendering a point in singles play.

Schorsch made quick work of Steiner at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Kissell improved to 10-5 in his rookie campaign following a 6-4, 6-3 win over Matej Svjetlicic at No. 3 singles. Dunn provided the Crusaders with the fourth point at No. 6 singles. The junior doubled up Eric Olivarez, 6-3, 6-3. Greiner outlasted Emhardt 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles for WMU's first point. Loebel followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 over Gardner. Bacalla closed out the day on a winning note, downing Matt Hamilton 7-6, 4-6, 10-6. Hamilton had defeated Bacalla 6-1, 6-0 back on September 26th at the Vredevelt Invite in Kalamazoo.

Valpo (2-2) will hit the road next Saturday for a doubleheader in Indianapolis. The Brown and Gold will take on Butler at 10 am ET/9 am CT before challenging IUPUI at 5 pm ET/4 pm CT.
