Ancona Wins Third Weekly Honor of Season

For the third time this season and the fourth time in his collegiate career, junior Brandon Ancona (Belvidere, Ill. / Rockford Christian) has been named the Summit League Player of the Week.

Ancona, who previously won the award on Feb. 12 and March 12, picked up a 7-6(5), 6-3 sweep of Illinois State’s Pol Rius Botifoll at No. 2 singles to help Valpo to a 5-2 road victory over the Redbirds on Saturday. Valpo improved to 12-3 on the season while notching its sixth straight victory.

Ancona also earned a win at No. 1 doubles this week as he paired with Kweisi Kenyatte (Detroit, Mich. / East English Village Preparatory) to beat Illinois State’s Egehan Sertkaya and Aleksa Lazarevic 6-3.

Ancona has won 12 straight singles matches since Feb. 3 and has rapped of five consecutive doubles victories. Only a junior, he already ranks ninth in program history with 59 career singles wins. This week’s triumph allowed him to improve his glowing singles record to 21-4 on the year.

A Valpo individual dominating a league’s weekly honors does have a recent precedent as Jeffrey Schorsch won five Horizon League Player of the Week distinctions in 2017. With Tuesday’s recognition, Ancona became the first player in the Summit League with three Player of the Week awards this season.

Valpo will seek a seventh straight victory on Saturday in a rematch of the 2018 Summit League championship as Drake comes to Northwest Indiana for a 10 a.m. first serve.
