The Valparaiso University men's track and field team won a quadrangular meet on Saturday afternoon in Greencastle, Ind. The Crusaders tallied 213 points to outdistance runner-up DePauw (176 pts.) and Indiana Wesleyan (174 pts.). Butler was fourth with 88 points.
Nate Nunnelly (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) won three events for the Crusaders on the afternoon. He posted victories in both the 800m and 1500m run, while also anchoring the 4x400m relay. In the 800m, Nunnelly broke the tape in 1:59.58, while crossing the finish line in 4:07.23 in the 1500m.
The 4x400m relay of Adam Wierciak (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette H.S.), Jeff Moscinski (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life H.S.), Kyle Jones (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) and Nunnelly finished in 3:32.87 to win by .23 seconds.
Wierciak also one an individual title on the day, taking the 400m hurdles by nearly a second with a time of 58.98 seconds. Doug Brown (Bluffton, Ohio/Allen East H.S.) also won on the track in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:58.84, cruising to victory by nearly eight seconds.
Todd Goodrick (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester H.S.) led the field event contingent with a pair of victories in the throws. His toss of 42'8" in the shot put was good enough for the win, while the sophomore's heave of 126'8" earned him a victory by more than six feet in the hammer throw.
In the javelin, Kristopher Schmautz (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate H.S.) posted an 8'7" win with a mark of 153'10", while Brian Schultz (Sheboygan, Wis./South H.S.) leaped his way to a win in the triple jump with a hop of 42'4 ¾".
The Crusaders will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Oxford, Ohio for the Miami Invitational.
