Two School Marks Set at Pepsi Challenge; Two Compete at Iowa State

Valparaiso's men's track and field team set a pair of school records on Saturday afternoon at the Pepsi Challenge in Kenosha, Wis., while two individuals also competed for the Crusaders at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.

Elliot Powell (Orange, Calif./Santa Ana H.S.) won both the 55m and 200m dash for the Brown and Gold in Kenosha. His time of 22.58 seconds bettered his own school record set last week while also setting a new meet record. Wes Kosko (Emporia, Kan./Emporia H.S.) finished fourth in the event with a time of 23.65 seconds. Powell also tied a meet record in the 55m, breaking the tape in 6.62 seconds to win the 55m.

Adam Wierciak (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette H.S.) continued Valpo's success in the 400m dash, finishing third with a time of 51.33 seconds, while Jeff Moscinski (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life H.S.) was fifth (51.89).

On the infield, Jon Braun (Saratoga, Wyo./Saratoga H.S.) tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 6'0 ¾". Powell also continued his success in the field events, earning a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 21'3 ¼".

Bryan Bell (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue East H.S.) also broke his own school record on the afternoon, finishing second in the weight throw with a heave of 51'3 ¾". Matt Larson (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator H.S.) finished fifth in the same event with a toss of 48'6 ¾".

Todd Goodrick (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester H.S.) earned a fifth place finish in the shot put with his toss of 47'11".

Over at Iowa State, Chris Orosz (Holland, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit H.S.) turned in a time of 4:29.65 in the mile, while Matt Blume (Logansport, Ind./Logansport H.S.) ran an 8:52.20 3000m.

Valpo will return to the oval next Saturday to compete in the Chicagoland Championships. The first event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
