Goodrick Sets School Mark as Valpo Finishes Fifth at Mid-Con Championships

Todd Goodrick (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester H.S.) set a new school record in the shot put helping to lead Valparaiso to a fifth place finish at the Mid-Continent Conference Indoor Championships which concluded Tuesday in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Valpo finished with 47 points as a team, two more than sixth place UMKC. Oral Roberts claimed the title with 178.5 points, followed by Southern Utah with 150 and Western Illinois with 134.5 points. Chicago State finished fourth with 62 points.

Goodrick finished second in the shot with a toss of 52'4", just six inches shy of the champion. He bettered Tim Andrews 1982 school mark of 52'2". Bryan Bell (Bellevue, Neb./East H.S.) was eighth in the event with a heave of 47'3 ½".

Jonathan Braun (Saratoga, Wyo./Saratoga H.S.) was Valpo's only other scorer in the field events Tuesday, finishing eighth in the high jump. He cleared 6'5 ½". Chris Daniels (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) led the Crusaders in the triple jump with a ninth place finish with a leap of 40'6 ¾".

On the oval, Elliot Powell (Orange, Calif./Santa Ana H.S.) finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.00 seconds. Daniels was fourth in the event with a time of 7.03 seconds. Powell was also in the finals of the 200m dash, but got disqualified.

Sean Barfield (University Place, Wash./Curtis H.S.) finished fifth for the Brown and Gold in the 60m hurdles. He crossed the finish line in 8.53 seconds.

Josh Parker (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park H.S.) led Valpo in the mile with a time of 4:47.77 to finish 11th, while Jason Douthett (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) was the top finisher in the 800m with a time of 1:59.18. Adam Piaskowy (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee H.S.) led the Brown and Gold in the 5,000m run with a ninth place finish, crossing the line in 17:07.24.

Valpo closed the meet with a sixth place finish in the 4x400m relay as Powell, Jeff Moscinski (Rockford, Ill../Christian Life H.S.), Matthew Wheeler (Dixon, Ill./Dixon H.S.), and Bryan Bandy (Barrington, Ill./Barrington H.S.) finished with a time of 3:26.25.

The Crusaders will close their 2005 indoor season Friday and Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. Friday's events begin at 5 p.m. CST.
