Freshman Bill Rixon (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) posted one of the best efforts in program history in the discus throw, while Steve Schubert (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) and Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) also recorded top-ten finishes as the Valparaiso men’s track and field team competed Saturday at the Dave Rankin Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.

Rixon finished seventh out of a field of 31 throwers in the discus and was the fourth-highest finisher out of current collegiate athletes.  His toss of 156’7” was a new personal best at the collegiate level by over 20 feet and was the second-best mark in school history in the event, trailing only former Crusader standout and current assistant coach Steve Bartholomew.

Schubert leapt to a fifth-place showing in the triple jump, registering a mark of 42’0 ½”, while Heun placed seventh in the 110m hurdles, crossing the line in 15.85 seconds.  Heun also led the Crusaders in the 400m hurdles with a 13th-place finish, while Leandro Schultz (Valley View, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) matched that placement in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Valparaiso returns to the track next Saturday, April 25, as it competes at the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis.  The first event is slated for an 11 a.m. CDT start.
