Valparaiso senior Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) was named the Horizon League Male Field Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this year and the seventh time in his career after breaking his own school record in the long jump last weekend at the Stan Lyons Invitational.

Mickens was honored after adding over four inches to his previous school record and personal best in the long jump Saturday.  The senior leapt 24’6 ½” to earn the event victory over a 30-athlete field by four inches, breaking his previous school record set earlier this season on April 9.

Mickens’ leap from Saturday was also enough to move him into a tie for seventh place in the Great Lakes regional rankings in the long jump, while he currently also ranks just outside the top-50 nationally in the event.  Mickens, who sits atop the Horizon League in the long jump and ranks third in the triple jump, and the rest of the Crusaders will compete over three days at the league’s Outdoor Championship meet, beginning this Friday, May 6 at 1 p.m. CDT in Indianapolis, Ind.
