The Valparaiso men’s track and field team looks to heat up the track this weekend at the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships. Youngstown State hosts the two-day meet at the Watson and Tressel Training Site.
Sophomore Justin Zosso (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) has been dominant in the pole vault this winter. The reigning Horizon League Indoor Champion soared to a new Crusader best 4.95m/16-2.75 at the prestigious Meyo Invitational on Feb. 6. He holds the top mark in the Horizon League by over a foot. Alexander Watson (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) and Nicholas Stack (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) hold the second and third best marks in the league with heights of 4.60m/15-1 and 4.55m/14-11, respectively.
Junior Jacob Smutz (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) holds the second farthest shot in the weight throw this season, tossing a 19.05m/62-6 moonshot – also the second best mark in Crusader history – at the Windy City Invitational on Feb. 7.
Sophomore Anthony Franze (Gunter, Texas/Gunter) leads the Crusaders in the 55 meter, 60m, and 200m dashes. He is coming off season bests in the 60 (7.18) and 200m (22.69) at the Orange and Blue Open this past weekend at Illinois. Freshman Brandon Riley (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) holds the ninth best time in the league in the 400m at 50.40.
Freshman Andrew Guzek (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) holds the sixth best marks in the shot put (14.74m/48-4.5) and weight throw (56-7.25), respectively, while senior Jacob Frey (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area) is fifth in the weight throw at 17.45m/57-3.
Action for the Horizon League Indoor Championships is set to begin at 8:00 am CT on Saturday with multi events. All other events will kick off at 2:30 pm CT.
