Valpo Softball Falls to Detroit and UCF

Valparaiso dropped a pair of games on Wednesday afternoon at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Crusaders lost the opener 6-3 to Detroit before falling to UCF 5-0 in the nightcap.

In the opener against the Titans, the Crusaders got on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Karen Constien (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North H.S.) doubled and advanced to third after Detroit threw Stephanie Reinke (Parker, Colo./J.K. Mullen H.S.) out at the plate. Constien then scored on a wild pitch to give Valpo a 1-0 lead.

The Titans answered with three in the bottom of the first before the Crusaders tied the game in the third. Reinke singled and moved to second on Constien's sacrifice bunt. Tana Barnes (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) singled Reinke home. Barnes then stole second and scored on Bridget Schwoegler's (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.0 single.

Detroit scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull out the victory as Brittany Attebery (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) suffered the loss in the circle for the Brown and Gold.

Against UCF, Dottie Cupp threw a one-hit complete game shutout as the Golden Knights blanked the Crusaders.

UCF scored three runs off of Amanda Gilbertson (Murrietta, Calif./West Albany H.S., Ore.) in the first and two more in the seventh on the way to the victory.

Erica Dahlmeier (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic H.S.) registered Valpo's lone hit, a single in the second.

Valparaiso (2-4) will look to move back to the .500 mark on Friday afternoon when the Crusaders play La Salle at 1:20 p.m. CST and Gardner-Webb at 5 p.m. CST in Florida.
