Monday, April 14, 2008

Senior infielder Mallory Gill (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) has been named the Horizon League’s Player of the Week after leading the Valparaiso softball team to a 4-0 record last week.

Gill, who entered the week with three career home runs, sent four balls over the fence during the Crusaders’ four games and batted .571 (8-for-14) for the week with ten RBIs.  She started off the week against IPFW with hits in five straight at-bats and drove in eight runs in the doubleheader sweep of the Mastodons.

The senior followed by going 3-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of then-Horizon League leader UIC on Friday, scoring three runs.  Gill also registered her first career multi-homer game in the nightcap against the Flames, hitting solo shots in the first and fifth innings.

Gill and the rest of the Crusaders return to the field on Tuesday when they travel downstate to take on Big Ten foe Purdue.  The first game of the twinbill is slated to start at 2 p.m. CDT.
