Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Senior pitcher Andrea Zappia (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) has been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week after her outstanding performance last week at the Rebel Spring Games.

Zappia did not allow an earned run in her 12.1 innings of work over two games.  She kicked off the week with a complete-game three-hitter against Lehigh, and followed with 4.2 innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory against La Salle.  The senior allowed batters to hit just .108 against her for the week.  On the season, Zappia owns a 4-2 record with a 0.83 ERA and has struck out 34 batters in 33.2 innings pitched.

In the classroom, Zappia maintains a 3.792 grade-point average as a history major.  She is a three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete, as well as a two-time Mid-Continent Conference All-Academic Team honoree.  Zappia was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team as a junior, and was recognized on the Fall 2007 Horizon League Academic Honor Roll.
