Softball Set to Open Home Slate Wednesday

Central Michigan (9-14, 0-0 MAC) at Valparaiso (9-10, 1-2 MVC)
Wednesday, March 20 - 1 p.m. DH
Valpo Softball Complex

The Valparaiso University softball team looks to open up its 2019 home schedule at the Valpo Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon when Valpo welcomes Central Michigan to town for a scheduled 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Valpo enters the mid-week twinbill coming off a three-game series at Bradley to open MVC play last weekend. Valpo dropped both games of the Saturday doubleheader, 9-1 and 8-3, before bouncing back with a 5-3 victory in the series finale.

Senior shortstop Jaymee Lawton is leading Valpo offensively this year, batting .340 and slugging at a .660 clip. In the circle, Kelsie Packard has pitched over half the team's innings and is 7-4 with a 2.71 ERA.

Central Michigan comes in at 9-14 and has been idle since going 2-3 at the South Florida Tournament March 8-10. Sophomore Shaidan Knapp paces the Chippewas offense, batting .375 and scoring a team-best 12 runs to date. Five pitchers have seen time for CMU, with Samantha Howell pitching a team-high 43.2 inning and owning a 3-3 record and a 4.53 ERA.

Should at least one game be played on Wednesday, it would match the earliest home opener in program history, as the 2012 and 2015 teams both kicked off the home slate on March 20 as well.

With inclement weather in the forecast for Wednesday morning, any updates on game times will be available via ValpoAthletics.com and Valpo Softball social media. Both games will have live stats available, while the second game of the day is slated for audio broadcast on WVUR.
