Valpo's Wins Second on Opening Day

The Valparaiso University volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the season as the Crusaders defeated Cal State Fullerton in four games, 30-24, 23-30, 31-29, 30-24 late on Friday evening at the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif.

The Crusaders had downed Bucknell in three games earlier in the day.

Michelle Robinson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal H.S.) led the way for the Brown and Gold offensively with 19 kills, while Marion Hansen (Huntley, Ill./Huntley H.S.) added 13 while hitting .333. Liz Mikos (Dundee, Ill./Jacobs H.S.) added 13 kills and nine blocks.

Sara Silcox (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) led Valpo defensively with 17 digs, while Cyndi Norman (Minooka, Ill./Minooka H.S.) dished out 45 assists.

Lauren Goins led the Titans (1-1) with 17 kills and 16 digs, while Sarah Morrison added 14 kills.

Valpo (2-0) outhit Cal State Fullerton .206-.125 for the contest as each school had 62 kills.

Valpo will return to action on Saturday when they face Nevada at 2:30 p.m. CDT and Fordham at 7:30 p.m. CDT to complete tournament play.
