Four Volleyball Players Earn Horizon League Honors

The Valparaiso University volleyball team had four players earn Horizon League postseason accolades, as the league announced its annual award winners on Monday. Junior Emily Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Allison Ketcham (Mishawaka, Ind./Marian) both were All-League honorees, while rookies Katherine Carlson (Lake Orion, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) and Kayla Currier (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) earned spots on the league’s All-Freshman squad.

The pair of All-League performers continue an impressive streak for the Crusader volleyball program, as Valpo has had multiple All-League honorees each of its nine years in the Horizon League and in every season dating back to the Mid-Con in 2001. The Crusaders have also had multiple All-Freshman team honorees in each of the last three years.

Campbell received All-League honors for a second straight season after another strong campaign on both sides of the ball. The junior ranked second in the Horizon League and paced the Crusaders with 4.27 kills/set, in the process moving into seventh place in Valpo history in career kills. Campbell reached double figures in kills 23 times, highlighted by three efforts of 25+ kills within league play. Defensively, she posted 2.97 digs/set and recorded double figures in the category 15 times.

Ketcham joined Campbell on the All-League squad after earning All-Freshman team honors a season ago. The sophomore was the top-ranking non-libero in the league in digs, posting 3.62 digs/set. She tallied at least 10 digs in 20 of the Crusaders’ 32 matches and surpassed 20 digs five times. Offensively, Ketcham registered 10 or more kills 15 times and closed the season strong, reaching double digits in eight of Valpo’s last nine Horizon League matches.

Carlson earned a spot on the All-Freshman squad as a true rookie for the Crusaders in 2015. With a pair of All-League performers in Campbell and Ketcham in front of her, Carlson still saw plenty of action as a freshman, appearing in nearly two-thirds of the Crusaders’ sets played. She averaged 2.30 kills/set on .250 hitting and 2.37 digs/set, reaching double figures in kills eight times and in digs seven times. Carlson bookended Valpo’s home Horizon League slate with a pair of strong performances, hitting .480 with 13 kills in the league home opener versus UIC and closing the regular season with a season-best 15 kills off the bench in a win over Cleveland State.

Currier enjoyed a solid season on both the attack and the block to earn her spot on the All-Freshman team. After sitting out the 2014 campaign as a redshirt, Currier hit .259 with 1.79 kills/set during the 2015 season – numbers which increased to 1.91 kills/set on .267 hitting in league-only play. Defensively, she led Valpo with 0.86 blocks/set, while her 65 total blocks ranked second on the team. Currier reached double figures in kills four times, including twice against Horizon League opposition, and picked up five or more blocks five times.
