Frederick Named College Sports Madness MVC Player of the Week

Valpo junior guard Shay Frederick (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) has been named the MVC’s Player of the Week by College Sports Madness after combining stellar performances and late-game heroics in a trio of Valpo victories last week.

Serving as mainly a facilitator in Wednesday’s matchup at Loyola, Frederick attempted just three shots on the night, but connected on two of them. Her second make was the biggest shot of the night, as in the final seconds of a tie game, Frederick took the ball from the top of the key and drove the right side of the lane to finish at the basket with 5.2 seconds to play to give Valpo the victory. She also grabbed four rebounds and handed out four assists — three of which came in the final six minutes — in addition to scoring six points in the win over the Ramblers.

Frederick surely was not shy about shooting in Valpo’s second game of the week, as she went 8-of-12 from the field, including a perfect 6-for-6 from behind the 3-point line, and 6-of-6 from the foul line to score a career-best 28 points in the series-opening win at Southern Illinois. She knocked down five of those triples in the second quarter as she scored 17 points in that period, a career best for a single quarter. Her 6-for-6 effort from deep is the most makes without a miss from the 3-point line in a game in program history and sparked a team performance of 15-for-20 from downtown to set a program record. While the scoring was the highlight, Frederick also found time to hand out six assists in the win as well.

Sunday saw Frederick combine a little from column A and a little from column B in another strong performance as Valpo closed out a sweep of the Salukis with a 70-63 overtime victory. It was again the junior who had the ball in her hands in a key situation late, and again she delivered with a driving layup with 11.7 seconds to play to force overtime. Frederick then scored five points in overtime, and also grabbed an offensive rebound off her own missed free throw which led to two more points in the extra period. For the game, Frederick was 6-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-11 from the foul line for a game-best 20 points, tied her career high with nine rebounds and led all players with six assists.

For the week, Frederick averaged 18 points/game on 59.3% shooting from the field — including a 7-of-9 mark from the 3-point line — and 78.9% shooting from the foul line. She also averaged 5.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game as Valpo extended its winning streak to four straight games, the program’s longest winning streak within conference play since 2007.
