The #15 Valparaiso University bowling team concluded its first post-holiday tournament on Sunday in Jonesboro, Ark., finishing up the third of three days of action at the Mid-Winter Invitational, hosted by Arkansas State.
Valpo opened bracket action on Sunday, contested in the best-of-seven baker format, against Louisiana Tech. The Crusaders used a 246 game to jump on top after one game and led 2-1 through three games, but Louisiana Tech took the next three games to deal Valpo a 4-2 loss.
The loss sent the Crusaders to take on Alabama State in their next match. After taking the opener, Valpo dropped each of the next three games to fall behind 3-1, but games of 199, 203 and 214 would be enough for the Crusaders to rally and earn the 4-3 win. The tournament finale came against Jackson State, but by the narrowest of margins, Valpo lost 4-3, as three games were decided by two pins or fewer and Jackson State won two of those three contests.
Valparaiso (31-33) continues its campaign next weekend at the Kutztown Invitational in Reading, Pa. The three-day event kicks off on Friday.
