The Valpo bowling team continued spring season competition on Friday as it opened the Flyer Classic in Lockport, Ill., hosted by Lewis. The Beacons, who were among teams also receiving votes in the latest NTCA top-25 poll released on Friday, picked up a pair of wins on opening day.

How It Happened

• Valpo opened tournament action Friday, contested in the five-game Baker format, against #13 Newman, falling by a 940-859 final.
• The Beacons rebounded in the second match slot with a 997-867 victory over Augustana.
• Valpo dropped a 1009-903 decision to #8 Maryville in its third match of the day, but again bounced back, this time claiming an 853-764 win against Carroll.
• The day concluded with a 925-880 defeat against #RV Marian.
• Valpo finished the opening day of action in 11^th place in the 20-team field with a Friday pinfall of 4,494 pins, just 31 pins outside of the top-10.
