Top-ten finishes by Gill, Kim, lead Crusaders

The Valparaiso women’s golf team concluded their first tournament of the spring on Tuesday at the Benbow Invitational on Tuesday in Jacksonville, Fla. The Crusaders finished in fifth place with a combined 36-hole score of 667.

Junior Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and sophomore Angie Kim (Schaumburg, Ill./Fremd) both improved by two strokes and they finished in a tie for ninth place with second round efforts of 80 and 79, respectively, to finish at 162 overall.

Sophomore Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) carded an 85 (168), two strokes off her season low 18 hole score, and finished the tournament in a tie for 15th place.

Junior Angie Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) saw her score drop by seven strokes on Tuesday to finish the round with an 84 and finish with a 36-hole score of 175. She finished in a tie for 28th place.

Freshmen Kiana Jongsma (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) and Katie Willenbrink (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) rounded out the Crusaders scoring with rounds of 90 (177) and 87 (180), respectively. Jongsma finished in a tie for 31st, while Willenbrink was four spots behind.

Valpo returns to the course on Wednesday as they stay in Jacksonville, but move their clubs six miles east to Windsor Parke Golf Club for the Bulldog Florida Invitational hosted by Butler University.
