Gill’s Eagle Leads Crusaders in Match Play

The Valparaiso women’s golf team opened play in their final regular season tournament of the season on Friday in the IUPUI/Valpo Match Play at Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind. The Crusaders dropped both matches on the day, losing 5-0 to Central Connecticut State in the morning and coming up just short in a tight 3-2 contest to the host Jaguars in the afternoon round.

Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and Angie Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) both won their afternoon matches 2 and 1. Gill would eagle number nine to finish her second round of 18 with a 77. Gaugert carded a 78 with a birdie on 17.

In the morning session, the duo would both shoot 77’s in close losses in match play. Gill lost by a point while Gaugert was in play till the 16th hole. Gill birdied number eight, while Gaugert birdied one and 12.

Kiana Jongsma (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) had both of her matches go down to the last two holes, shooting a career low 76 in the afternoon after carding an 84 in the morning.

Katie Willenbrink (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) shot an 84 in the morning and improved by eight strokes in the afternoon for a career low 76. She birdied six in the morning and 13 and 15.

Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) carded an 81 in the morning round and carded an 86 in the afternoon

Valpo will face off against Horizon League foe Green Bay on Saturday in the final day of the IUPUI/Valpo Match Play. Results will be posted at ValpoAthletics.com following conclusion of play and a full recap can be found on the Internet home of the Crusaders as well.
