Coryell Earns Second MVC Weekly Award of the Season

For the second time this season, Valpo soccer sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Coryell (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, this time after backstopping the Beacons to a pair of clean sheets last week.

Coryell opened the week with a five-save performance in a mid-week 1-0 victory at Drake. She followed with nine saves on Sunday in a scoreless draw with UNI, a result which secured a top-two placement in the MVC standings and the corresponding bye to the MVC Tournament semifinals. Her nine saves against the Panthers were a season high within conference play.

Coryell has surrendered just one goal through six conference matches while making 35 saves, posting five shutouts in that stretch. She now owns nine clean sheets in 14 career MVC fixtures and has recorded 12 total clean sheets for her career.

The weekly award is the eighth honor bestowed upon a Valpo soccer player this season, but Coryell becomes the first player to be honored multiple times, as she was previously Defensive Player of the Week back on Oct. 4. She has now been chosen as MVC Defensive Player of the Week four times in her career.
