Castro Diaz, Cripe Claim Two Events Each at IUPUI Invitational
Sophomore Gonzalo Castro Diaz turned in a 1:58.75 time in the 200-yard IM Friday.

Sophomore Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) and junior Marley Cripe (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville [Liberty]) notched two first-place finished at the IUPUI Invitational Friday, but the Jaguars scored team victories on both sides. IUPUI defeated Valpo 150-106 and 165-97 in the men's and women's competition, respectively.

On the women's side, senior Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:14.89. Freshman Rachel Law (Wayne, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) hit the wall at 11:38.20 for fifth place.

Sophomore Ciara Lightner (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) turned in a 1:03.96 finish in the 100-yard backstroke which earned her fourth place. Freshman Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) edged out Butler's Amanda Wagner by .31 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke to earn second place.

Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) came away victorious in the 200-yard butterfly. The junior was the first to hit the wall with a finish of 2:13.22. Segatto later claimed third-placei in the 500-yard freestyle thanks to a 5:23.47 result.

Cripe recorded two first-place finishes in Friday night's meet. She notched a first-place finish with a 24.25 time in the 50-yard freestyle before stopping the clock at 59.47 in the 100-yard buttefly. Cripe was the only swimmer in that race to finish in under a minute.

Senior Katrina Peters (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) secured a podium finish in the 200-yard breaststroke.

The 200-yard IM produced a photo finish. Senior Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University) and Butler's Hailey Jensen headed down the stretch in a dead heat. But it was Jensen who touched the wall at 2:23.30, a mere 0.16 seconds ahead of Taubert's finish at 2:23.46.

The women's 400-yard freestyle relay netted a team victory for the Crusaders. The quartet of Cripe, Trimpe, Lightner, and Bretl beat out Butler's A team 3:49.16 to 3:50.69.

For the men, freshman Brian Wasicak (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) touted a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 10:09.53 time. Junior Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton) and Tim Mitchell (Lakeville, Minn,/North) turned in 3rd and 4th place results respectively in the 100-yard backstroke. Mitchell later received a third-place result with a 2:08.05 time in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Frederick Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) was the winner of the 100-yard breaststroke. Jenny stopped the clock at 59.65, just ahead of IUPUI's Ben Weingart and his 59.82 time.

Castro Diaz earned his first of two wins in the 200-yard butterfly thanks to a 1:57.91 time, more than three full seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. His second victory came by a much wider margin when the sophomore stopped the clock at 1:58.75 in the 200-yard IM.

Senior Tate Wegehaupt (Tigard, Ore./Tigard) blew away the field in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing nearly seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. His 2:10.26 result granted the Crusaders valuable points.

Just as the women's squad did, the men's 400-yard freestyle relay finished in style. Wegehaupt, King, Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) and Jenny turned in a first-place finish thanks to a 3:16.62 time.

The Crusaders return to action Saturday afternoon at the ARC. Both the men and women's teams will battle the Lewis University Flyers at 1:00 pm in a dual meet.
