The Valparaiso swimming teams concluded their seasons on Saturday at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championship at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis. The men finished in seventh place with 126 points and the women placed eighth with 164 points. Valpo finished the Horizon League Championship with 14 new school records.
Senior Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) bettered her school record in the 200 yard butterfly by a tenth of a second and finished in 11th place (2:07.54). She also finished 12th in the women’s 1650 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 17:33.91 to close out her career.
In the men’s 200 yard backstroke, Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep.) and Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton) both broke the school record as they finished in 1:51.34 and 1:52.45 to take ninth and 12th place, respectively.
Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) bested his school record in the 200 yard butterfly by almost three tenths of a second as he touched the wall in 1:52.44 and finished 13th.
In the 200 yard breaststroke, Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) both broke the school record as they finished in 2:23.24 and 2:24.48 and took 11th and 12th place, respectively.
The men’s team of Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West), Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton), Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and Castro Diaz finished in 3:07.25 to take seventh place.
Ethan Leach (Yorktown, Ind./Burris Laboratory) touched the wall in 17:10.03 in the men’s 1650 yard freestyle to finish in 15th place. Grant Girten (Blue Ash, Ohio/Sycamore) finished just behind in 16th (17:34.21).
The women’s 400 yard freestyle relay of Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves), Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), Trimpe and Dani Gomez Barrientos (Mexico City, Mexico/Grandview Prep. [Fla.]) finished eighth in 3:37.06 and set the fifth fastest time in school history.
