Crusaders Earn Number of Program Top-Ten Times on Day One at Calvin
Rachel Law was part of two top-10 times in program history Thursday.

The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. on Thursday to kick off the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational. The two teams combined to set six top-ten times in school history within just four total events on the opening day of action.

On the women’s side of things, the Crusaders currently sit in sixth place with 93 points - only 22 points behind third place.

The 1650 yard freestyle event brought in a pair of new top-ten times for the Valpo women, starting with Paiton Krebs (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney), who finished in sixth place with a time of 18:01.31 for the fifth-best time in Valpo history. Just behind Krebs was Rachel Law (Wayne, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), posting a time of 18:07.12 to finish in tenth place. Law’s time places her seventh best all-time in Crusader history. Betsy Pogue (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff) finished just outside Valpo’s all-time top-ten as well with a time of 18:36.90, good for 15th place.

In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the team of Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), Law, Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), and Krebs finished in ninth place with a time of 7:55.54, the seventh-best time in the event all-time at Valpo.

The men’s team also posted three times among Valpo’s all-time best on Thursday as it closed the first day of action sitting in sixth place with 106 total points.

In the 800 yard free relay, the team of Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Oxford), Mac Sogandares (Reston, Va./South Lakes), Colten Lawson (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) and Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) earned the third-best time in school history, touching the wall in 7:02.35 – good for ninth place.

Robert Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette University H.S) earned the Crusaders’ fourth-best time in program history with a 12th-place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle event in 16:51.48. Ryan Manderfield (Avon Lakes, Ohio/St. Edward) finished just behind Bretl with a time of 16:54.30, placing him fifth in Crusader history.
