Women's Tennis Sweeps Chicago State and UMKC

Valparaiso won a pair of matches over conference foes on Friday afternoon in Chicago, defeating Chicago State and UMKC by 7-0 scores.

Neither match will count in the conference standing in the spring.

Valpo began the morning sweeping the Cougars. In doubles action, Monika Danko (Northfield, Ill./New Trier H.S.) and Christina Scala (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) were 8-3 winners at the top spot, while Mara Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South H.S.) and Patricia Arakaki (Campo Grande, Brazil/LaPorte H.S., Ind.) were 8-1 victors at second doubles. Jill Dierberg (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) and Charmane Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) blanked their opponent 8-0 at third doubles.

In singles action, Sonkin cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles, while Danko won 6-2, 6-0 at the second spot. Scala won 6-0, 6-0, while Dierberg had the toughest match, winning 7-5, 6-3. Arakaki recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win at fifth singles, while Stanislaw blanked her opponent at the sixth spot 6-0, 6-0.

In the afternoon against UMKC, Danko and Scala were 8-0 victors at the top spot, while the other doubles teams won by default. Sonkin recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles, while Danko, Scala, and Stanislaw all won 6-0, 6-0. Dierberg posted a 6-2, 6-2 win, while Arakaki won by default.

Valpo will conclude its fall season on Saturday morning, hosting Oakland at 9 a.m.
