Crusaders Sweep UMKC to Stay Unbeaten in Mid-Con Play

Valparaiso swept UMKC 7-0 late Thursday evening in Las Vegas, Nev. to improve to 6-0 in the Mid-Continent Conference.

The Crusaders swept through doubles play for the match's first point. Monika Danko (Northfield, Ill./New Trier H.S.) and Christina Scala (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) posted an 8-2 win at the top spot, while Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) and Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North H.S.) won by the same score at second doubles. Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) and Charmane Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) were 8-3 victors at the third spot.

In singles play, Mara Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South H.S.) was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at number one, while Janssen posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at second singles. Danko cruised 6-0, 6-0 at number three, while Scala recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win. Evangelist won easily 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth spot, while Stanislaw closed out with a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles.

Valpo (10-5, 6-0) will face Southern Utah on Friday afternoon, beginning at 2 p.m. CDT in Las Vegas.
