Janssen Finishes Perfect Singles Play at Saluki Invitational

Valparaiso University freshman Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) won two more singles matches on Saturday to finish perfect at second singles in the Saluki Invitational held in Carbondale, Ill.

No team scores were kept in the tournament.

Janssen downed Maria Blanco of Southern Utah in come-from-behind fashion 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 to post one of just two Crusader wins against the host Salukis. Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) also was a victor, 6-3, 6-4 against Zoya Honarmand at fifth singles.

The Crusaders also played contests against Eastern Kentucky, winning three of the four singles contests. Janssen was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at the second spot, while Mara Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South H.S.) won 6-1, 6-2 at first singles. Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North H.S.) also recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win at third singles.

Janssen and Jill Dierberg (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) also teamed for an 8-5 win against the Colonials at second doubles.

Valparaiso has now completed its fall season of competition.
