Crusaders Continue to Sweep Through Mid-Con

Valparaiso continued its strong showing at the Mid-Continent Conference cluster in Indianapolis, Ind. on Friday as the Crusaders recorded 7-0 sweeps of both Chicago State and Southern Utah.

In the morning match, the Crusaders defeated Chicago State (2-7, 1-1 Mid-Con) convincingly. Valpo opened with a win in the doubles point and never looked back. Christina Scala (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) and Monika Danko (Northfield, Ill./New Trier H.S.) were 8-2 winners at first doubles while Rachel Janssen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) and Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) posted an 8-3 win at the second spot. Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) and Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) led 6-2 at third doubles when the match was haulted because the point was determined.

The Brown and Gold then made short work of closing the match in singles action. Scala pitched a shutout, 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles while Chada and Evangelist both won by scores of 6-0, 6-1 at fifth and sixth singles respectively to clinch the victory. Janssen then earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at number one singles while Danko notched a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at the second spot. Dierberg needed three sets for her win at third singles, but tallied a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 victory.

Valpo came back in the afternoon against the Thunderbirds and immediately took control. The doubles team of Janssen and Dierberg posted an 8-2 win at the second spot while Chada and Evangelist were 8-4 victor at third doubles. Southern Utah (6-3, 1-1 Mid-Con) led Danko and Scala at first doubles 5-3 when the match was stopped.

The Crusaders proceeded to sweep all singles contests in straight sets. Danko was a 6-1, 6-1 victor at second singles while Evangelist captured Valpo's third point at the sixth spot by the same score. Scala clinched the match at fourth singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win and Dierberg added a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at third singles. Janssen registered a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top spot while Chada posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at fifth singles to complete the sweep.

Valparaiso (7-4, 3-0 Mid-Con) will conclude its weekend action on Saturday afternoon with a 12 p.m. CST match against IUPUI.
